Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative illness after Alzheimer’s disease. With the burgeoning aging population, it is imperative that social workers, nurses, case managers and discharge planners appreciate the nuances of this chronic illness so they can advocate for the appropriate management of their Parkinson’s patients. The heterogeneity of the Parkinson’s population necessitates keen assessment skills in order to address individual differences in disease presentation and devise the best management plan. This web seminar will review the basics of Parkinson’s disease and the atypical Parkinsonism, pharmacological and surgical treatment strategies, the role of the allied team, the disease trajectory and the need for a comprehensive, individualized, management plan.

Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • Differentiate between idiopathic Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonism;
  • Describe the motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease;
  • Understand the pharmacological, surgical and allied team treatments of Parkinson’s disease; and,
  • Identify the evolving chronic disease trajectory and creation of comprehensive, individualized management plans.
